During the final night of blind auditions, last night on The Voice, Denton resident Katrina Cain performed for the four judges before a nationally televised audience (left).
Singing Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon,” the three-time Lakeside Music Series performer “turned the chairs” of both eligible judges, Blake Shelton and Jennifer Hudson.
“You should have been a four-chair turn,” said Adam Levine (of Maroon 5 fame) to Cain and the audience. He and Kelly Clarkson were not eligible to “turn their chairs” since they had already filled their teams.
Cain last performed at Lakeside on May 11 (see the short video below of her performing Coldplay’s tune, “Clocks”).
Several other Lakeside Music Series artists have received accolades recently.
Two perform this Friday.
Chris Holt & Chad Stockslager, performing as their powerful alter-egos, Simon & Garfunkel, will appear in the plaza at 7:30 pm. (In case of rain, the duo will play inside at Mio Nonno.)
The Dallas Observer Music Awards (held in December) nominated both — Holt as a guitarist and Stockslager as a pianist. (They have been nominated in prior years as well).
On Friday, November 3, Kirk Thurmond (of Kirk Thurmond & the Millennials) will take the stage at Lakeside.
Thurmond was a Dallas Observer nominee in 2015 and is again in 2018 as Best Funk/R&B Act. You won’t want to miss him.
On August 1, Lakeside hosted Ryan Berg, nominated for Best New Act (with his band the Velvet Ears) as well as Best Male Vocalist. Click here to see a portion of his performance of Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason” that also features a guitar solo by Jonan Rigsbee.
Becky Middleton, who performed at Lakeside on July 20, is nominated for Best Female Vocalist. She won a lot of fans at Lakeside on that hot summer night. Click here to see her rendition of The Beatles’ “Can’t Buy Me Love.”
On May 4 of this year, Russ Hewitt brought his intoxicating concoction of rumba flamenco rhythms and lightning guitar runs to Lakeside for the second time.
Hewitt’s CD Cielo Nocturno received nominations for a Grammy Award in 2017 in three different categories (Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, Engineered Album, Instrumental Composition ‘Persian Sky’).
Of course, this list neglects to mention some of Lakeside’s most popular acts — all winners in their own right.
Many are scheduled to perform in the last few weeks of the season, including Sebastian Valenzuela (October 26), Chaz Duplantier (November 10), Magen Miller (November 23), and Jon Christopher Davis (also November 23).
We salute all the performers who have made the Lakeside Music Series a success. Each week, attendees can count seeing and hearing outstanding musical acts.
How has Lakeside managed to attract such fine talent?
Michael Clay of Texas Music Project is the answer.
His strong relationships throughout the North Texas music scene — along with his sage advice for the team at Lakeside on all things related to the music series — has helped shape a winning event.
Thanks, Michael, for three seasons of outstanding music. We’re looking forward to many more.
