On Chant Duplantier’s first visit to Lakeside on July 7, he and bassist Jerry Smith Jr. mezmerized the audience with jazzy renditions of covers of R&B standards from Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder to Hall and Oates and Steve Ray Vaughn.
Duplantier’s smooth voice and crazy guitar work shone as a counterpoint to Jerry Smith Jr.’s funky bass lines. The combination produced a vibe that turned Lakeside’s plaza into an outdoor jazz club.
The night’s finale, “Purple Rain,” turned into a jam that ended with the Lakeside crowd roaring its approval. You won’t want to miss his return engagement.
