Only a small crowd was on hand at 7 to hear a jazzy rendition of “Dock of the Bay.” Too bad.
As the evening wore on, however, the crowd grew and with each tune — from Stevie Wonder to Hall and Oates to Steve Ray Vaughn — they recognized they were in for a treat.
Duplantier’s smooth voice and crazy guitar work paired with Jerry Smith Jr.’s funky bass lines transformed Lakeside’s plaza into a hip jazz/blues nightclub.
Very cool. The night’s finale, “Purple Rain,” ended with a jam that showcased the talents of Duplantier and Smith. The Lakeside crowd roared their approval.
Look for Chant (ChantMusic.com) to return to the Lakeside Music Series in the fall.
Show up early, next time the plaza is likely to be packed.
Next week: Weldon Green.
